Standard retention basins created by C-3 Environmental Specialties are used to manage storm water runoff to prevent flooding and downstream erosion, and improve water quality in an adjacent river, stream, lake or bay. It is essentially an artificial lake with vegetation around the perimeter, and includes a designed permanent pool of water.

Filtration basins function by detaining storm water in the basin. As storm water infiltrates through the amended soil, sand, or engineered media, pollutants are filtered and adsorbed onto soil particles. Treated storm water is directed to the receiving stream via the under drain system.
